Keeping Tabs

Veronica slumped over her desk in a state of exhaustion. The screen before her showed the tracker on the vehicle she sent with Xander. In the beginning, she was checking the feed every day, her blood pressure heightened by the territories he had to cross. When the medical unit sent a real time report, it took every fiber of her assistant’s reasoning to stop her from sending a rescue unit out. From then on, she was only allowed to check on him biweekly. This was one of those days except she felt more at ease.

With the number of companions growing she was sure he could make it to the Litigator alive. After that, it was in the hands of the universe. She was surprised by the Karysilan overriding the vehicle’s protocol. It never occurred to her that any of the original creators of those machines would still be around. She was grateful for him showing up when he did.

Alicia came through her office doors in usual hasty fashion. The woman was always in a hurry to get her tasks completed ahead of schedule. She caught a glimpse of Veronica’s screen and her lips went thin, slightly crooked.

“What now?” She demanded. “I swear, you keep this up and I will block that feed.”

Veronica looked up at her in angered astonishment. She didn’t like her tone one bit. As if knowing that, Alicia walked over and leaned down.

“I need you focused. You can’t lead if this is going to deter your goals. Or would you rather just hand this facility over to one of those jackasses out there?”

“Don’t you dare say that to me!” Veronica slammed a fist on her desk.

“Then get your shit together, boss.” Alicia straightened her glasses and stood.

Veronica regained her composure as well and sat straight in her chair.

“Report.”

“When I say jackasses, that means plural enemies.”

“Explain.”

“One name. Chad Hoskins.”

Her chair scraped across the lacquered floor as she stood abruptly. Her eyes glared out the bay window yet she all she could see was red from squinting too hard. With clenched hands, she walked around the desk to stand closer to it. She took a few deep breaths, shaking her hands loose before focusing on the scenery.

“Is he partnered with the New Order?”

Alicia snorted. “Hell no. You think he wants to share glory with anyone? No. He’s causing his own havoc out there.”

“What the hell is his agenda?”

“As far as taking over facilities, the same. But he wants to essentially segregate regular humans from hybrids and aliens.”

“Ugh.” Veronica held her stomach. The thought of both factions made her feel sick. “How much time we got?”

“Depends on what your plan is.”

“To defend, of course.” Veronica turned away from the window and made eye contact with Alicia. “They will know not to underestimate me.”

“Then we’re good. Combat units will start being on standby next week.”

Both women stood contemplating their roles in the near future. Veronica sneered.

Hoskins, you bastard.

****

Veronica strolled along the atrium in her personal center with her head down staring at the diamond shaped floor tiles.
